At OLHC students learn Italian as part of our languages program. In 2018, students will have fortnightly lessons with our Italian Specialist Teacher, supported by fortnightly sessions with our Italian Language Assistant in the alternate weeks. After participating in two Catholic Education Melbourne programs in 2017, we have updated the teaching of Italian to include an emphasis on understanding and producing oral language and use a gestured approach that allows students to quickly learn and retain language. Recent research has shown that learning a second language helps students to better master literacy in their first language, as well as building cultural understanding and setting students up for further language learning in secondary school. OLHC is committed to giving students the best start possible to see themselves as speakers and learners of Italian.
